Why Menstrual Education Matters Now More Than Ever!

Maybe you can relate:
Were you taught enough about menstrual health growing up?
Have you noticed changes in some of your students, but feel unsure how to support them?
Is your curriculum limited, or does time and confidence stand in the way?

And Here in Ireland?
Here’s the most telling statistic:
There is currently no national data available on how
menstruation impacts students in Irish schools...
And therein lies the problem...Without research, awareness, or structured support, too many young girls are left to silently struggle often in shame or confusion. Schools are doing their best, but gaps remain.

Every month, 1.8 billion people around the world menstruate, yet the topic remains shrouded in stigma, discomfort, and misunderstanding even in schools. It's time to change that narrative.

We owe it to our children and teens to give them the knowledge and confidence so many of us never had.
That’s Where Blossom Comes In!
Blossom provides practical, inclusive workshops that support your curriculum while offering students the tools and understanding they need to feel confident in their bodies.

By creating space for education, empathy, and conversation, we empower the next generation to thrive both inside and outside of the classroom.

What is Menstrual Cycle Awareness?
Menstrual cycle awareness is the practice of understanding and tracking the natural rhythms of the menstrual cycle - physically, emotionally, and mentally. It involves recognising the four phases of the cycle (menstrual, follicular, ovulation, and luteal), and becoming attuned to the shifts in energy, mood, and needs that arise throughout. By increasing awareness, people who menstruate can learn how to better care for themselves, make informed decisions, and feel empowered rather than ashamed or confused by their cycle.

Unfortunately, many young girls enter their menstruating years with little support or education, and without this foundational awareness, the effects can ripple across many areas of life:

+ Education A lack of menstrual education, combined with stigma and limited access to products, leads many girls to miss school during their periods. This absence can negatively impact academic performance and confidence. A 2018 study by Plan International found that 61% of girls in Ireland missed school due to their period. Without cycle awareness, many don't know how to manage or prepare for their cycle, leading to increased stress and disengagement from learning.
+ Mental Health Hormonal changes throughout the cycle can influence mood, cognition, and emotional wellbeing. Without understanding these fluctuations or how to support themselves with practices like proper nutrition, rest, or mindfulness... many girls experience increased anxiety, low self-esteem, and emotional overwhelm. Menstrual cycle awareness can help normalise these changes and offer tools to navigate them with compassion rather than lack of.
+ Sports By age 13, nearly 50% of girls drop out of sport, with menstruation, body changes, and self-image playing a major role. Many don’t know how to adapt their physical activity in alignment with their cycle. Cycle awareness can help girls understand when their bodies might feel stronger or more fatigued, reducing shame and encouraging a sustainable, body-positive approach to sport and movement.
+ Health & Period Poverty For many, especially those affected by period poverty, menstruation is associated with stress, shame, and even health risks. When basic needs like sanitary products aren’t accessible, some resort to unsafe alternatives, which can lead to infections or other complications. Social silence and stigma deepen this issue, discouraging open conversations. Raising menstrual cycle awareness can challenge harmful norms and help create healthier, more supportive environments - where menstruation is seen as natural, not shameful. By fostering menstrual cycle awareness from a young age, we can help create a world where girls and menstruators feel more empowered, supported, and informed in their bodies and less isolated by silence or stigma.

Hi, I’m Colette – the founder and creator of Blossom.
Blossom was born from a deep desire to support and uplift young girls as they move through puberty and begin their menstrual journey, something I believe should be celebrated, not feared or silenced. This programme is my heart’s work. It's built on nearly two decades of experience as a Post-Primary Home Economics teacher, a registered Nutritional Therapist specialising in menstrual health, and a holistic therapist trained in Reiki, Sound Therapy, Yoga and Breathwork. Over the years, I’ve seen the same story unfold too many times, girls growing up with confusion, shame, or anxiety around their bodies and cycles. There’s still a huge gap in education, support, and open conversation. Too often, young females enter their menstruating years completely unprepared. Lacking the knowledge, confidence, and tools to understand what’s happening in their own bodies. That’s why I created Blossom. These workshops, programmes and talks are here to change that story. They’re designed to empower, to educate, and to break the stigma around menstrual and female health. Blossom is a safe space where girls can learn real, honest, and practical information, while also building a sense of connection, confidence, and pride in who they are. Even if they just attend a single talk, they’ll leave feeling more in tune with themselves, more understanding of their bodies, and better equipped to make choices that support their wellbeing - physically, mentally, and emotionally. I absolutely adore getting into schools to deliver these workshops! It’s where the magic happens. The impact doesn’t end in the classroom; it ripples out into homes and families, opening up new conversations and healing generational silence. This work is special. It’s life-changing, and more than anything... it’s needed! If you’d like to chat more or find out how I can bring Blossom to your school or community, please fill in the enquiry form below.
